Chapter Fifteen
Welbyâs footsteps moved toward her and to her surprise, the man hunkered down on the other side of the stone and began to feel around the edge of it with her. His lips were pressed tightly together as he slid his fingers slowly along the cracks and he didnât look up at her when he muttered, âI let my frustration get the better of me.â
She pressed on her side of the slightly wobbly stone and moved her fingers around the side to check for a widening crack in the dark. âIt happens to everyone.â
The vet paused, then turned slightly in his crouch to look at Leander, whoâd stepped away and now glared across the courtyard at Gruene. âAnd I doubted your certainty, Leander. Will you accept my apology?â
The red dragon took two more steps back until the end of his powerful tail bumped against the wall, this time without dislodging any of the supporting stones from it. He tilted his head and held Welbyâs gaze. âOnly if my mage accepts as well,â he growled.
âIâm sorry, Raven.â
She sighed and dug her fingers deeper beneath the edges of the jagged rock. âAs long as you help me get this stone out of the ground, weâll call it even.â
Welby looked at Leander again, who snorted and lowered his head. âIf you trust us, then trust us, healer.â
âIâve never intended anything else.â Finally, Welby returned to examining the heavy stone with Raven.
When she looked at him, his deepening frown told her he hadnât quite received what heâd wanted out of the exchange. âApology accepted,â she muttered with a small smile. He met her gaze with the barest hint of hope behind his dark eyes. âFrom both of us.â
With a nod, he returned to the task at hand and wobbled the stone from his side while Raven did the same from hers.
Youâre too easy on him, Raven.
She shook her head, knowing it would come across to their mission partners as nothing more than frustration with a loose stone that hadnât yielded to either of them. He went easy on me when I attacked him for putting down a dragon too sick to be healed. I was new to that then. Heâs new to this. And right now, we could all use a little break before things get worse. I canât shake the feeling they will.
Leander growled and tried to pace across his side of the courtyard, but he barely had the room to turn and take the half dozen steps in the opposite direction. Gruene watched him with her head lowered. The only parts of her that moved were her emerald eyes as her gaze followed the large red male.
âI hate to say it,â Welby muttered. âBut I donât believe this particularââ
âStand back.â
âIâm sorry?â
Raven leapt to her feet and shooed the vet away from the stone. He complied quickly and almost bumped into Leander pacing behind him again before the dragon lurched away to avoid touching him.
She extended an open hand toward the wobbly cobblestone and muttered, âVerecundia.
